Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
This fun (disturbing?) illustration is for the Illustration Friday (@ifri) challenge - "sight"
36in x 58in.

Poor little ghoul. What can be said about this? She's just plain... disturbing. On *so* many levels.

Sometimes, a scribble is just a scribble. Other times... what follows is a random stream of thought, not meant to necessarily be factual (that will make sense further down). This is just an excerpt from the running dialogue in my head.

I began this piece just screwing around, without any definite intent. I only wanted something that was off, in some way. Disturbing, even. As it progressed, I realized that it was reminding me of another artist's work, more and more....

I'm really tired of all the Photoshop debates. Just as one dies down, another fires up. Get used to it, people. Photoshop (and/or similar apps) are here to stay. There is no going back. All these debates do is hurt a company that produces a good piece of software. Granted, their pricing structure sucks; but, Photoshop is not the problem. I hear what people are saying and I understand the arguements. They are valid - almost.

Been so busy lately. I wanted to do a big, dramatic piece, but it just wasn't in me today. My mind and body are just a bit too worn out. Still, I think this is interesting enough to publish. 40in x 40in

Continuing my love affair with New York city.... I really need to go back some day and get fresh photos. This particular scene does not really exist - though it is based on a couple of photos I took in September of 2002. As vast as the city seems from the ground, it does have very real boundaries. For this piece, I wanted an impression of an endless expanse of buildings.

... and what do you see? Most people only see the literal interpretation of whatever is in front of them. Very few take the time to really look, to really see things, people, ideas, or events from all angles. It's not their fault. We are wired that way. We come preconditioned to relate everything to our own mental models of what we consider to be real, right, or moral. It takes effort - an act of will - to see beyond the superficial or literal. Even then, most will stop with what lies just beyond. But, you have to dig further. There are layers on layers of details... countless ways of seeing things from various angles and points of view (both literally and figuratively).

I thought I would try combining a couple of my styles. My current "vector" styles sometimes seem to be a little lacking in texture. My older styles were a little too traditional, in that I was trying to replicate real world "wet" media. Maybe a hybrid style is the answer.

I'm finding distorted faces interesting, lately. The pulled, stretched, contorted expressions seem to have a little more meaning. They're a bit more expressive. If only I could find more people willing to be portrayed this way. Everyone is a little too worried about how they look, how others perceive them. Get over it people. None of us fits any kind of physical ideal. If you think you do, sorry. You're dead wrong. Delusional. There IS something wrong with you. Some flaw, major or minor, in how you look.
Learn to love the flaws.
